Places Names

Ableton Lane

Origin Unknown. However, the general collection of lanes before 1922 were called "Ableton Lanes". Station Road and Church Road were once Ableton Lanes.

Severnwood Gardens

Unknown Origin

Abbott Road

Mayby so called because of the monks that used to walk along the path (now a public footpath) to the Priory in Shaft Road.

Some say it was named after Robert Strides wifes maiden name, or his agent (Abbott Manson)

Denny Isle Drive

After the island in the Severn (also known as mouse island for obvious reasons)

School Way

Name after the local primary school the road is adjacent to.

Prospect Road

After a large house called Prospect House.

Albert Road

Name after Prince Albert. Albrt & Victoria were used in many areas to name things during the reign of Queen Victoria.

Victoria Crescent

Name after Queen Victoria. Also, it would seem normal that Queen Victoria would take precedence over Albert.

Gorse Cover Road

Was named because before it became the Caravan Park, it was a field covered in gorse and lots of foxes and rabbits lived there. It was where the foxes hid from the Berkeley Hunt in the gorse covert ('Covert' is a traditional hunting term)

Church Road

Because of the church thst waslocated at the end of the road.

Station Road (Formerly part of Ableton Lane and Gravel Road)

Obviously called because of Severn Beach railway station.

Stride Close

Named after Robert Stride the local entrepreneur who essentially created Severn Beach as beach resort.

Salmon Close

Named after the Severn Beach Hotel then later changed to the Severn Salmon public house.

Riverside Park

Named after being next to the River Severn. The name was suggested by the agent to the developer Bob Tapsell. They needed a marketing name and it stuck.

Beach Avenue

Named after the Beach.

Beach Road

This was originally called Beach Way, and the part of Beach Road from Pippets Court to 132 ( Mr Shufflebottom has his fair there and lived in his Caravan) was called West End Road

Osbourne Road

Possibly after Robert Strides solicitor (Osborne Clarkes)

Green Lane

Origin Unknown. Probably just a leafy lane. Original alignment changed when the Second Severn Crossing was built.

Little Green Lane

Origin Unknown. Leads into Church Road. Also known as "Piggy Lane". The alignment was changed by the railway and Second Severn Crossing approach roads.

Shaft Road

Monks used to live in Shaft Road, opposite the Ist house (empty field at present). (See Abbott Road)

===

Severn Beach Farm

Was abandoned because of flooding and the building of the Binn Wall, so they built the Elms, Ist house on the left after bungalow in Ableton Lane from A403.

Salthouse Farm

Obviously because of the salt pans that were there.

Gravel Road

Once situated at the of Station Road and was the access road to the Beach. Ableton lane led into Gravel Road.

Gypsies Platt

Origin Unknown. Platt = Path

===

A403 (Opposite Gypsies Platt)

Gavier Way

Names given by Developers, names of directors/owners.

Palmer Avenue

Names given by Developers, names of directors/owners.

Source: Mike, Frances.B, Sandra.B, Peter.T

Useful Link: Pilning & Severn Beach History Group Website

Severn Beach Neighbourhood Watch Minutes 12 Feb 2007

Severn Beach Neighbourhood Watch Minutes- 12th February 2007

A welcome was given to new members.

The Parish Plan Display at Severn Beach School on Saturday 31st March 2007

Volunteers are required to man the stall between 11 am and 4pm
also Parish Information Day - date and details to be advised
It is hoped to have a Gateway to Severn Beach with a boat filled with flowers

Crime figures: There have been 8 incidents of crime mostly from sheds or cars, we are advised that buzzer alarms are a good deterent.
A Trading Standards Alert has been issued. For example, if your bin is due to be emptied on Monday 25 December it will instead be collected on Wednesday 27 December.

Those who would usually have had their bins collected on Thursday 28 December, now need to put them out on Saturday 30 December instead. These alterations will be in place until Saturday 13 January, and people should put out their bins for normal the collection as of Monday 15 January.

For the first black bin collection after Christmas, bags of additional side waste will be collected alongside the black wheeled bins. However, this is a one-off service for that day and does not apply to green bins. Officers recommend that if you have too much cardboard for your green bin flatten it, fold it, and keep for your next green bin collection.

People are also reminded they need to put their bins and recycling boxes out by 7.00am on the morning of collection throughout the year.

If residents have refuse that needs taking to the Sort It! centres at Little Stoke, Mangotsfield, Thornbury and Yate, they should be aware the centres are closed on the following dates:

• Monday 25 December 2006
• Tuesday 26 December 2006
• Monday 1 January 2007

For all other dates the site will be open at the usual time:

• Weekdays – 8am to 4.15pm
• Saturdays – 8am to 4pm
• Sundays – 9am to 1pm

To recycle items such as Christmas trees, they can be chopped up and put into the green bins provided they aren’t too big. Branches or the trunk should be no more than 4 inches in diameter, all decorations removed and the lid on the green bin should be able to close. If the tree is too big for the green bin, you should take it to a Sort It! centre where it will be separated out for composting.

Unfortunately, many Christmas cards now have plastic or metal tinsel, or other attachments and cannot therefore be recycled as part of our normal collection service. Some branches of Tesco, TK Maxx and WHSmith are offering a collection service for used Christmas cards, along with some local charity shops.

Wrapping paper also cannot be collected as part of the kerbside collection service as metal tinsel, glitter, etc, can act as a contaminant.

If you need to check the dates for the refuse and recycling collections over Christmas, or any other information, visit www.southglos.gov.uk/environment/rubbishwasteandrecycling or you can call 01454 868000.

Severn Beach - Flooding 1990 Footage

Might not work in firefox or even display...

Severn Beach Birds Section - Update

Well I've updated the Severnside Bird section of the website. I thought it would be a good ideal to include a picture of all the species of the birds seen on Severnside and Severn Beach to date. What an epic that turnt out to be, but I think it was worth it and I hope all that browse it will find it useful by putting an image against a name. Each is linked out to the most excellent WikiPedia for all the information you may need on each bird.
New Bird Page here.

My favourite must be the Osprey and Golden Oriole (Very Rare.

As mentioned before there is an excellent introduction by Paul Bowerman of the Severnside Bird website and ornathogical expert of the are.
